Rye is very well suited for the production of biogas substrate. It is also ideal for winter cover crop cultivation, since its winter-hardiness means its yield is reliable.

Yields of 40-60 dt dry matter per hectare are possible. In addition to pure seed, forage rye can also be grown in a mixture containing legumes with hairy vetch or winter peas (e.g. in the MehrGras BG 100).
