Bristle oat
Avena strigosa
Bristle oat is a catch crop which does well on almost all soils. It is drought-resistant and can also be used as feed. It is distinguished by its fast initial development and is reliably winterkilled. Bristle oat can be used in the spring as green fallow, as a summer catch crop following an early-harvest main crop, or as a component in catch crop mixtures. Its nematicidic effects on free-living nematodes such as Pratylenchus and others are particularly noteworthy. These effects are comparable with a long-lasting bare fallow.
