Garden cress

Lepidium sativum

In the last decade, garden cress has become widely used in Germany as a catch crop. Garden cress has a good potential for weed suppression and germinates quickly, which provides very good ground cover. Because of its good ground cover without particularly high biomass formation, garden cress is an ideal candidate for use as a catch crop prior to spring mulch seeding, e.g. of maize. It is reliably winterkilled. Since garden cress is a cruciferous plant, it should be avoided in crop rotations with intensive sugar beet and/or rapeseed cultivation.
