Cup plant
Silphium perfoliatum
Sow once, yield for more than 10 years!
The cup plant is a flowering plant native to the North American prairies. It is a persistent, perennial plant that is grown as an energy crop and, due to its large biomass production, used in biogas plants. Depending on the location, the cup plant grows up to three metres tall. It has medium green, opposite hairy leaves. It is noticeable how the pairs of leaves are fused together on the stem, thereby forming small "cups" in which dew and rainwater collects. This makes the cup plant well adapted to drought and capable of coping with longer dry periods.
